Handflowers
Handflowers, also sometimes called 'slave bracelets', are hand ornaments that
consist of a bracelet and rings connected with chains.
The term 'slave bracelet' is actually incorrect for this style of adornment. A
'slave bracelet' was originally used in Africa during the time of the slave trade
and usually 7 to 11 of these bracelets were 'payment' enough for a slave. They
were large, heavy bracelets of solid copper with fluted ends, slightly engraved
with a geometric design.
The basic design of a handflower is a combination of three simple parts; the
bracelet attaching it to the wrist, and rings (as many of five) to attach the
handflower to your fingers. The space in between can be as ornamented as
humanly possible, or as simple as five chains linking the bracelet and rings.
The handflower that the Western world terms a 'slave bracelet' is styled after a
North Indian wedding ornament called a haathphool or pocha, depending on
the region. Also depending on the region, is whether the handflower has 1, 3 or
5 chains leading to the fingers and what metals and gems it is crafted of. It may
also be crafted with a heavy medallion or flower that the chains attach to.
The handflowers I create are meant for light use (think club wear). They were
designed to be comfortable and mobile. The rings I construct for my
handflowers are flat, which reduces the risk of pinching of the webs between
the fingers on the hand.
These handflowers can be created in copper, brass, bronze or sterling silver and
in almost any desired colour - please see my colour chart for colours available.
Because handflowers are as individual as the people who wear them, and are
custom sized, I request a deposit of half the purchase price prior to
commencing the crafting of these splendid hand adornments.
